Leading with Purpose: A Q&A with Michele C. Meyer-Shipp, CEO of Dress for Success

We chat to CEO of Dress for Success, Michele C. Meyer-Shipp, on what it means to lead this organization and her secrets behind dressing for success:

Who do you draw inspiration from when you dress for success?

I seek to balance professionalism with authenticity. I have and embrace my personal style, of course, but I also look up to trailblazers in the business world who keep elegance and professionalism, while also having a distinctive touch.

DFS’s mission is to help women achieve economic independence by providing no-fee programs, development tools, and professional attire to thrive in work and in life. What do you think is the most challenging barrier to women seeking jobs today?

The gender pay gap, which continues to create significant disparities in economic independence. Now more than ever, women around the world need access to resources, support, and opportunities to achieve economic independence. According to McKinsey & Company’s last Women in the Workplace report, women remain underrepresented at every stage of the corporate pipeline, regardless of race and ethnicity, and it will take nearly 50 years to achieve gender parity for all women.

Another one is balancing societal expectations of women with professional demands, creating a challenge in job retention and growth.

What advice would you give to women who wish to have their voices heard professionally?

The first one is to own your story and don’t shy away from asserting your ideas in meetings and discussions. Also, cultivate a strong network of allies and mentors. Lastly, be intentional about how you present your ideas and where do you want to go next in your career.

What is an essential part of your look when you get dressed for work?

A blazer is a good idea. It always works! I actually try to focus on comfort—ensuring clothes fit well and allow for confidence without sacrificing comfort. I also add accessories that express my personality.

As a leader, what motivates you in your everyday professional life?

The opportunity to break barriers and create more inclusive spaces within the corporate world; a strong commitment to mentorship and developing others, and an eagerness tocontinue learning and grow, both personally and within the organization.
