Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz Wear Bespoke Carolina Herrera To The Met Gala

“Camp is the attempt to do something extraordinary. But extraordinary in the sense, often, of being special, glamorous” writes Susan Sontag in her 1964 essay Notes on “Camp”, the guiding inspiration for this year’s Met Gala, “the hallmark of Camp is the spirit of extravagance”.

Musicians Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats bring extravagant glamour to the event in bespoke Carolina Herrera, crafted by hand in the New York Atelier.  Creative Director Wes Gordon collaborated with the couple to design looks reflecting the theme’s exaggerated side, an interpretation sincere to the bold dynamic and vibrant character of the icons — that which reflects the House’s own.  Excited, creative, open-minded and gracious are words that come to mind when reflecting on the design process with Alicia and Swizz Beatz, characteristics of modern elegance that the House continually values.

Grace Jones and Elton John guided the design process, notes Wes, “after discussing with Alicia we wanted to go in a direction of more over-the-top camp rather than costume-like, which is how we came to prominent figures with strong images such as Grace, Elton, and Diana Ross. Glamorous and the center of attention in a room.”

The Atelier sourced twenty-five yards of tulle and satin to craft Alicia’s stunning gown, lavishly embroidered with green sequins and brought to life over several weeks by a team of eleven.  After reviewing a variety of tuxedo styles, a sumptuous cotton velvet was chosen for Swizz Beatz, complementing Alicia’s look.  His look was created in our Ourense atelier, and finished by our tailors in New York.  Alicia’s jewelry is over-the-top excessive, playing up the camp theme.
